Cha Dao: Chinese Tea Ceremony

Our events begin precisely on time, and doors will be locked five minutes before the event begins in order to foster an environment of supportive silence in the zendo (practice hall). Please plan to arrive at least ten minutes before the stated start time. Parking can be challenging in our neighborhood, so allow extra time for finding a parking space and walking to the center. Our daily sittings do not require advance registration, but do register in advance for special events such as introductory seminars, all-day sittings, workshops, and classes.

Cha Dao: Chinese Tea Ceremony

Experience the simplicity and elegance of a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Zen Center of Denver member Greg Fellman offers three varieties of tea ceremony: leaves in a bowl, side-handle pot, and gong fu (see below). Each has its unique characteristics and beauty. We sit in silence as we brew and drink a number of bowls of tea, letting the Way of tea speak to us.
Each ceremony lasts about an hour. The suggested donation is $20, made to the host at the time of the event. Registration closes 24 hours before each ceremony. This event is in person only.
Greg Fellman has been pursuing the way of tea since he landed in China over twenty years ago for a two-year stint as an English teacher. Living in the city of Hangzhou, famous for its Long Jing or Dragonwell green tea, infused him with a lifelong love of tea. He owned the Denver branch of the Seven Cups teahouse from 2008 to 2012. Leaves In A Bowl: Celebrating the art of simplicity, in this ceremony we simply put tea leaves in a bowl, add hot water, and drink, a practice that has been handed down for millennia.
Side-handle Pot: An extension of the leaves in a bowl ceremony, in this ceremony we brew in an elegant sidehandle pot and decant into bowls. While retaining the beauty of leaves in a bowl, we are able to brew more varied teas with the sidehandle pot.
Gong Fu Cha: Utilizing Yixing tea wares, The Gong Fu tea ceremony is considered the most sophisticated method of brewing tea and requires the highest level of skill. “Gong fu” loosely translates to skill through mastery. Through this ceremony, you can learn to appreciate the many flavors of a tea as it changes and matures through steeping after steeping.
