Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based course developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn over 40 years ago at UMass Medical School. It is highly effective at helping people manage stress, pain and illness, as well as finding more joy, ease and insight into one’s life.
This eight-week class will be taught by Peggy Sheehan, M.D., who brings many years of experience of teaching MBSR programs at Kaiser Permanente, along with being a Zen teacher and one of the ZCD’s spiritual directors. Though offered at the Zen Center, this is a secular mindfulness course available for anyone interested in learning widely applicable meditation skills. Peggy offers a wonderful balance of decades of meditation practice, clinical experience and gentle humor.
The class will meet each Monday from 7:00-9:00 p.m., May 3 – June 21. The program will also include one six-hour retreat day, Saturday, June 3, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 pm. The cost is $275 for non-members or $150 for ZCD members; please register and pay in advance via the form below to reserve your seat (note that you must complete payment to complete your registration). This class is in person only.
The registration deadline is Wednesday, April 26; please note that the registration fee is non-refundable beyond that date, though we are happy to apply your payment to future classes.
Click the event for details and registration. Our events begin precisely on time, and doors will be locked five minutes before the event begins in order to foster an environment of supportive silence in the zendo (practice hall). Please plan to arrive at least ten minutes before the stated start time. Parking can be challenging in our neighborhood, so allow extra time for finding a parking space and walking to the center. Our daily sittings do not require advance registration, but do register in advance for special events such as introductory seminars, all-day sittings, workshops, and classes.
